The skies of Nibiru, the twelfth world, were dying. Only gold, suspended as dust aloft, could shield the wanderer's breath. So the deposed king Alalu crossed the deep alone — and on a blue world, tasted gold in the waters.
Enki, lord of wisdom, splashed down with fifty heroes into the gulf's brine. On the marshes where two rivers meet they raised the first abode: E.RI.DU, "home built afar" — the first city of Earth.
Anu the king came down and lots were cast: Enlil took command of Earth, Enki the seas and the Abzu mines. Alalu, defiant and defeated, was exiled to Mars — his face, legend says, carved upon its rocks.
The mines of the Abzu never slept; the Igigi ferried gold between heaven and earth. Seven cities rose upon the Edin — Nippur the Bond-Heaven-Earth, Sippar the spaceport, Shuruppak the city of healing. The gods toiled, and ages passed like dust.
Anzu, grandson of Alalu, rallied the aggrieved Igigi and stole the Tablet of Destinies; heaven's commands fell silent. Ninurta, Enlil's warrior son, hunted him down among the mountains and won it back. The Enlilite line held Earth — but the old king's grudge did not die.
"The toil is too great!" The gods of the mines burned their tools and besieged Enlil's house. Then Enki rose in council and spoke the words that changed all: "Let us fashion a primitive worker, to bear the yoke of the gods."
In the House of Life, Enki and Ninmah blended the essence of the gods with the clay of Earth's wild being. Many trials failed — until one perfect creature opened its eyes.
Ninmah lifted the child: "My hands have made him!" He was named Adamu, child of the Earth. Birth-goddesses bore more, and the primitive workers went down into the mines.
Adamu's kind tended the orchards of the Edin. Enki secretly gave them "knowing" — the power to beget. Enlil raged: "Man has become as one of us!" Cast from the garden, mankind scattered — and multiplied.
As the daughters of men multiplied, the young Igigi looked down and took them as wives. Their half-divine offspring — the Nephilim — walked the Earth. And Enlil's loathing of mankind deepened.
Ice gripped the Earth; famine and plague stalked mankind. Enlil decreed: let them wither, aid them no more. Only Enki, oath notwithstanding, reached out again and again to the beings he had made.
Enki and Ninmah raised humans of Anunnaki blood to rule at Shuruppak; Enmeduranki of Sippar was admitted to the divine council to learn the arts of heaven. The line between god and man dissolved — and in Enlil's anger, a darker resolve took shape.
The watchers of the sky brought dire news: Nibiru's passage would tear loose the ice of the south, and a wall of water would swallow the continents. Enlil bound the gods by oath: not one word to mankind. Let the flood erase the error of their making.
Forbidden to warn a man, Enki spoke to a wall of reeds: "Reed hut, hear me; wall, remember — tear down your house, build a boat. Abandon riches, save life." Beyond the wall, Ziusudra of Shuruppak heard all.
The wave came from the south; the gods rose skyward and wept, watching Earth drown beneath them. Seven days and nights the ark drifted, carrying the seed of life and one god's unyielding mercy.
The ark grounded on Ararat's twin peaks. Enlil raged at the smoke of offering — "How did life escape?" — yet, seeing man's endurance, his fury became a sigh. Ziusudra and his wife, granted long life, were taken to Dilmun.
The olden cities lay buried in silt. Descending upon the highlands, the gods chose to build anew with the survivors. Enlil brought domesticated grain from Nibiru; Enki taught plow, boat, and herd. The dawn of agriculture lit the mountain terraces.
The renewed Earth was apportioned: the Two Rivers to Enlil's line, the Nile to Enki's, and the spaceport of Sinai held sacred and neutral. In those borders lay the embers of a thousand years of strife.
Marduk, Enki's firstborn, reigned over the Nile as Ra. His brother Thoth kept calendar and measure; the feud of Osiris and Seth bled through dynasties. The same gods, under new names, wrote another theogony.
The clans warred, legend says, over the guidance crystals of the Great Pyramid. The victors stripped it bare and recut the Sphinx — leaving empty chambers for mankind to wonder at forever.
The antediluvian cities rose again upon their ruins, and Sumer flared like daybreak: writing, the wheel, calendar, law, and the temples of the Twelve. "When kingship was lowered from heaven," the King List begins, "kingship was first at Eridu."
Anu made his last state visit to Earth; the precinct built for him became Uruk. He granted the city to his great-granddaughter Inanna — and the queen of love and war began her ascent.
Gilgamesh of Uruk — two-thirds god, one-third man — journeyed to Dilmun to ask deathless Ziusudra for immortality. He returned instead with the answer pressed into clay: man must die; only deeds and walls endure.
Landless Marduk raised his own seat at Babylon, "Gateway of the Gods," and began a tower to reach heaven. The Enlilites struck it down by night and confounded the builders' tongue, scattering his followers. Marduk stormed back to Egypt, deposed his brother Thoth, and reigned as Ra.
Inanna raised Sargon, a gardener-born commander, to build Agade — mankind's first empire. Goddess and king swept all before them, until they touched Babylon's sacred soil and faced Marduk returned. In four generations the empire fell; the Curse of Agade blames offense against the gods.
Marduk, claiming the age of the stars as his own, seized Babylon and the cities. In fury, Enlil's clan loosed the weapons of terror upon Sinai and the plain — but the wind turned. An Evil Wind of death drifted east, and in a single night the cities of Sumer fell silent. Only the Lament for Ur remains, weeping in the clay.
The Evil Wind spared Babylon — a sign, the gods agreed. Marduk at last took supremacy: each New Year the priests recited the recast Enuma Elish, crediting creation itself to him and crowning him with fifty names. In his coronation, the age of the gods began its long dusk.
After Sumer's death the gods receded into legend — some skyward, some behind the thrones of men. Temples emptied, sky-ladders crumbled; only the wedge-shaped script still whispers their names in clay. And the last page of the legend reads: when Nibiru again crosses the near sky, those who came down shall return by the old road — while on Earth, mankind keeps watching.
An Akkadian seal in Berlin's Vorderasiatisches Museum. Its star with eleven dots was read by Sitchin as the Sun and twelve worlds — mainstream Assyriology sees a common star symbol. One seal, two cosmologies.
An Akkadian seal, c. 2300 BCE (BM 89115). Enki/Ea stands with streams of water and fish flowing from his shoulders, his two-faced vizier Isimud beside him — the classic portrait of the lord of waters and wisdom.
Anu is rarely shown in person; his signs are abstract — the multi-tiered horned crown on kudurru stones, and the cuneiform determinative 𒀭 (DINGIR), "heaven/god," written as an eight-pointed star before every divine name.
Eighteen superimposed temples were excavated at Eridu — from a one-room shrine of the sixth millennium BCE to Enki's great E.ABZU. The Sumerians themselves held it the first city of kingship. The ziggurat of Ur still stands.
Gudea's cup for Ningishzida (c. 2100 BCE, Louvre): two serpents entwined on a staff. Modern legend reads a double helix; to Sumer it was a god's emblem. The Atra-Hasis tablets preserve the myth itself — man shaped from clay and a god's blood.
A post-Akkadian seal in the British Museum: a fruit tree, two seated figures reaching for it, a serpent behind one. Dubbed the "Adam and Eve seal" since the 19th century; the museum today calls it an ordinary banquet scene.
Winged sages of the Nimrud reliefs, bucket and cone in hand — the seven antediluvian Apkallu who taught mankind the arts. Later legend wove these heaven-sent teachers into the tale of the Watchers and the Nephilim.
Old Babylonian epic tablets (copies c. 1700 BCE): vexed by mankind's noise, Enlil sends plague, drought, famine — each undone by Enki's counsel. The textual root of the age of hardship.
Tablet XI of Gilgamesh from Nineveh's royal library — George Smith famously lost his composure reading it in 1872. An older Sumerian version, the Eridu Genesis with Ziusudra, was found at Nippur. The flood is written in clay in three tongues.
The Farmer's Almanac tablet from Nippur teaches the year's fieldwork — arts the Sumerians called god-given. Seals show their invention, the seeder-plow; the Debate between Grain and Sheep sings grain's descent from heaven.
The Great Pyramid and Sphinx: modern legend reads navigation beacons and war scars, citing water erosion; Egyptology dates both firmly to the Fourth Dynasty, c. 2600–2500 BCE. The stones stay silent.
A four-sided prism, c. 1800 BCE, in the Ashmolean. "When kingship was lowered from heaven, kingship was at Eridu." Eight kings before the flood reign 241,200 years — the verse the legend loves best.
Lamentation tablets from Nippur mourn Ur's fall: the gods abandon the city, a "storm" grinds it to ruin. History blames the Elamite invasion; modern legend hears something else in the Evil Wind's verses.
From Assyrian reliefs to Persepolis, a winged disc hovers over kings and gods — the solar emblem of Shamash or Ashur to scholars; to modern legend, Nibiru itself: the last sign left hanging over mankind.
The slab from Ninurta's temple at Nimrud: lion-bodied Anzu in flight, Ninurta wielding thunderbolts behind. The Anzu tablets tell of the Tablet of Destinies stolen and reclaimed — modern legend reads an aerial mutiny put down.
One of the oldest wisdom texts (Abu Salabikh copies, c. 2600 BCE): the elder of Shuruppak counsels his son Ziusudra. With the King List's colossal antediluvian reigns and Enmeduranki's admission to the divine council — clay footnotes to the demigod kings.
Etemenanki, "House of the Foundation of Heaven and Earth" — its ~91 m footprint still traceable at Babylon. The Tower of Babel Stele shows Nebuchadnezzar II beside its elevation. Genesis tells of tongues confounded; Sitchin read an unlicensed launch tower.
The bronze head from Nineveh, perhaps Sargon himself; on the Louvre's Victory Stele his grandson Naram-Sin wears the horned crown of a god — the first mortal king in divine guise. The Curse of Agade blames the fall on sacrilege at Nippur.
Seven creation tablets from Nineveh's royal library, opening with the very line that opens this page. Marduk defeats Tiamat and builds heaven and earth from her body; Sitchin read a planetary collision — Nibiru and the olden Earth. Recited whole each Babylonian New Year.
